Spinal fractures range from low-energy fragility fractures in thin, osteoporotic bones to high-energy injuries from falls, road accidents and adventure sports. Prof Kruger is Head of the Acute Spinal Cord Injury Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital and manages the full spectrum of spinal injuries.

After a spinal injury
Anyone with neck or back pain after a significant fall or accident, especially with numbness, weakness or tingling in the arms or legs, should be kept still and taken to a hospital emergency unit for assessment.
