Infections of the spine are uncommon but serious. They can arise from bacteria in the bloodstream, from tuberculosis (still common in South Africa) or after spinal surgery. Early diagnosis and targeted treatment usually lead to a cure.

When to suspect infection
Constant back pain that is worse at night, especially with fever, sweats or weight loss, or in people with diabetes, HIV or a recent infection or operation, should be investigated promptly.
